The New Digital Renaissance

For those who’ve been living under a rock (or happen to be less obsessed with tech than yours truly), AI art involves training an artificial intelligence program on a bunch of art, and then the AI makes its own, new art in response. This ain’t your grandma’s paint-by-numbers.

In 2018, a work of AI art called “Portrait of Edmond de Belamy” created quite a stir when it sold for a whopping $432,500 at a Christie’s auction. The artist, or should I say the “brains” behind it, was none other than an AI developed by Obvious, a French art collective. This AI-based piece had detailed brush strokes and a distinctive style. It was the creative output of Generative Adversarial Networks or GANs, one of the more interesting technologies in AI.

The Secret Sauce: Generative Adversarial Networks

For newcomers to the AI party, here’s a quick primer on GANs. Picture two AIs squaring off in a creative battle. While one AI, called the “generator,” spews out artworks, the other AI, known as the “discriminator,” scrutinizes them for authenticity. Think Simon Cowell but less snarky.

Each time the generator creates a new piece, it tries to fool the discriminator into believing the artwork is the real deal, basically indistinguishable from human-created art. The discriminator gets better at catching fakes, while the generator learns to produce increasingly convincing pieces. Hogwarts may have its Defense Against the Dark Arts, but in the tech world, we have got Artistic Offenses by the Dark Algorithms.

Art or Artificial?

Although AI generating art is an exciting, emerging phenomenon, it raises the inevitable question: is it truly art? Technically, yes. It’s a visual product created through a process, just like traditional art. So in those terms, you might say “heck, yes!”

But on the philosophical side, things get murkier. Art has traditionally been a reflection of human experiences and emotions, and it’s difficult to argue that a machine can capture these complex aspects of humanity in its work.

Still, much like how I feel about pineapple on pizza (controversial, I know), I think it’s all about perspective. As much as AI art reflects machine learning algorithms, it is also a mirror to our own creative spirit, our technological advances, and the innovative ways we seek to express ourselves.

This marriage between creativity and technology has just begun, and with companies like OpenAI, DeepArt and Google’s DeepDream, we are witnessing a techno-renaissance. These aren’t Mona Lisas or Starry Nights but a new medium nonetheless, adding to the wide range of artistic expression.

Or personal AI artists, crafting family portraits or cartoon strips in the comfort of our homes? Yeah, folks, the future is algorithmic and definitely artistic! You know, there was once a time where space was the final frontier; an unreachable zenith of boundless potential. But I like to think that we’re getting pretty chummy with space these days. We’ve sent men to the moon, robots to Mars, and even a Tesla towards the asteroid belt. But the real question is, What’s next?

The recent surge of interest in privatized space travel, driven by a small group of eccentric billionaires with deep pockets (yes, I’m talking about you, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos), has changed how we think about the space industry. In this post, I’ll explore some of the most exciting developments on the horizon and why they get my geeky heart beating faster than a Quasar.

SpaceX’s Starship: Fulfilling the Dream of An Interplanetary Species

SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, has been a game-changer in rocket technology. They’ve achieved what once seemed impossible, landing rockets back on Earth following a mission. This has seriously cut the cost of space travel, opening the door for an era of exploration we never thought possible.

Sometimes, I’ve gotta remind myself this is real life, not just an episode of Star Trek.

As someone who’s been obsessed with space and interplanetary travel since childhood, it’s thrilling to watch SpaceX inch closer to this audacious dream, with Starship successfully completing high-altitude flight tests.

Blue Origin’s Lunar Lander: The Return to the Moon

On the other side of the billionaire space race, we have Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. Their lunar lander, aptly named ‘Blue Moon’, aims to shuttle payloads to the lunar surface to establish a sustainable human presence on the moon.

Bezos envisions millions of people living and working on the moon, leveraging its abundant resources and proximity to Earth. It’s excitingly ambitious, though I’ll admit, trying to imagine myself taking the ‘Amazon Lunar Prime’ shipping option does feel a bit surreal.

With the Artemis program, NASA’s own initiative to return humans to the moon by 2024, collaborations with private space companies are definitely on the table. While the space race between these giants might seem like billionaire boys playing with their expensive toys, the implications for the advancement of space exploration are enormous.

Space Tourism: A Vacation Above the Clouds

Sure, being an astronaut is cool. But have you ever fantasized about being a ‘vacationnaut’? Alright, that’s not a real term, but we’re basically talking space tourism here. Companies are opening up the stars for ordinary folks like you and me.

Virgin Galactic, headed by Sir Richard Branson, is already accepting bookings for suborbital spaceflights. SpaceX has announced plans for space tourism too. A trip orbiting the Earth? Sign me up! Just got to figure out where to find that spare $200,000+ in the couch cushions.
